Looking after our Blue and Green Infrastructure

Green and blue infrastructure refers to the use of blue elements, like rivers, ponds, flood
Avon Valley Nature Reserve
plains,
water treatment facilities, and green elements, such as trees, hedges, lawns, fields and parks, in planning and land use.

We have 5 policies which consider how we protect and enhance the city’s green spaces and rivers –our green and blue infrastructure – there is a summary below

1)    Enhancing blue and green infrastructure and biodiversity – new developments must provide a minimum of 10% net biodiversity gain

2)    Habitat improvement and restoration schemes – development which harms the blue or green infrastructure  will not be supported,  we have identified specific sites where improvement can be made

3)    Open space provision – major development near our open spaces must provide for the maintenance of these sites

4)    Local green spaces -  we will protect our green sites from development

5)    Construction and development management for projects affecting the River Avon SAC – this sets out how project along the rivers in Salisbury should be managed to prevent harm to rare river habitats
